Although I am not a hardcore fan of the Grateful Dead I have four of their albums which I cherish!! I need help! I used to have a Dead show that was taped years ago. Maybe mid 80's. There was no track listing. But the start of the tape had the band tuning and they went into the first song. I do not know the name, but I remember the melody. Can someone here help!! It is driving me crazy!! I could hum it to anyone who will help me. Then I could more than likely find the song here. HELP!!!!!

Well maybe not tuned. But you hear them playing their guitars testing drums, etc... Did not mean disrespect.

TUNING is the most played song in the history of the Grateful Dead:

http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=creator%3A(Grateful%20Dead)%20AND%20description%3A(Tuning)&sort=-date&page=1

Copy and paste the whole thing to your browser.

That should narrow it down for you.

Was it a short 'tune' or a long 'tune' ?

Although not at the beginning of the show so not a candidate for this instance, the tuning before the Beach Boys set during the April '71 Fillmore East show makes 'Seastones' seem like a mere 'blip' in time.

Oh to be young and naive (in the nicest possible sense) again. OK, oh just to be young again...............

now if they went into the second song (after the tuning) before the first song, then that would narrow it down a bit.

There ya go. Strat gave ya a good start on common openers in the 80's. That'll narrow it down a bit. You'll find the tune. Just gotta poke around.

Do you remember even a single noun or verb from the lyrics?? That would allow folks to really narrow things down quickly, at least in terms of the opening number.

No. It has been so long since I heard the song. I just remember the melody and the guitar lines.

shucks... that makes it tough. You'll have to try your best at spelling out the melody (dum-da-DEEE-dum), or figure out a way to send an audio of you actually humming!

Hope you're not pulling our leg here, but if you're requesting help in earnest - and it sounds like you are - many here would be happy to help.

without the name of the first song, you're SOL on this one...everything will be a blind guess...the Dead tune befroe just about every song...even openers...

common songs used to open first sets in the 80s...

Jack Straw
Shakedown Street
Alabama Getaway
Cold Rain and Snow
Hell In A Bucket
Mississippi Half Step Toodleloo
Feel Like a Stranger
Promised Land

did Bob or Jerry sing the song?...we need more info

What are the odds he goes RIGHT to it?

Hey, a good mystery is fun. So what if it might take a few minutes. *wink*

It's possible that it was a commonly traded show too. That might narrow it down some. Then again...maybe not!

Edit: I'm willing to help if we get some more clues.
